If my network card doesn’t support WPA2, do I need to replace it or can I just get an external network adapter that does support WPA2?

It isn’t your network card or related to your NIC at all.
WPA2, WPA, and WEP ONLY apply to wireless devices.
So if you are connecting a desktop to your wireless router with an Ethernet Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 patch cable, then WPA2, WPA, and WEP will never apply.
The physical security of your building will apply to the level of your wired network connection. Tempest emissions from Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 are reasonably low level.
If you are using a wireless adapter, then you will have choices that can range from WPA2 – WEP. If your wireless adapter doesn’t support WPA2 and you intend to use WPA2 then your wireless adapter would need to be replaced. You could also use a USB 2.0 wireless adapter instead of the existing one, especially for a laptop that has a built in wireless adapter that is out dated.
